Dennis Pearne and the Elastic Waste Band

Bands may come and go, but they don't come and go the way Dennis Pearne and his Elastic Waste Band does! What was a common problem among bands was solved creatively, and pragmatically, with the formation of the Elastic Waste Band.

Looking back, Dennis Pearne has played for years in the New England area with various duos and bands. His first duo partner was his brother, Chris Pearne. Rising Tide was his first band in the 1980s recording an album with Good Company Productions. The Marienne Kreitlow/Dennis Pearne Duo released a singles disc featuring a song from each member of duo. The Duo later became Left-of-Center with the addition of bass and lead guitarist, Fred Ross-Perry. Percussionist Tem Noon joined Left-of-Center --now the Dennis Pearne Band-- after Marienne's departure for a solo career.

The concept of the Elastic Waste band was a simple solution to a band breakup. After two years together, the Dennis Pearne Band was about to break up; Fred was planning a move to California (and he's still threatening to do so!). As Dennis pondered how to fill the impending void, the idea of an 'adjustable' band developed. The band members appearing for any given show would vary the music: A few members would offer a tight set, while all members appearing together jammed the evening away. The band's 'Elastic' name reflects the comings and goings of its' members.
As word spread through friends, Dennis' band grew from 2 (Tem and Fred) to 8 members. Bruce Bartone, bass and lead guitarist, was picked up to replace the departing (?) Fred. Laurie Goldsmith, another percussionist, is a soloist with an upcoming album, just as flutist Sue Kranz is putting the finishing touches on an album of her own. Wood and strings' Debby Lempke adds her banjo to the works when she is not teaching and managing at the store. Flor de Cana's founding member, Willie Sordill, puts in time, on occasion, with his saxophone. Amanda Udis-Kessler rounds out the group with her energetic piano playing. All are studio musicians AND songwriters in their own right.

An evening with Dennis and the Elastic Waste Band is always different. As planned, each show presents a variety of Dennis' music; an unexpected plus to the works comes from the fact that all the current members are also songwriters of a wide range of topics and styles. Now, each set no only showcases Dennis' material, but each member present has a chance to perform their own compositions with the rest as backup. Recognition of their studio talents came last August when Richie Havens invited the band to join him during his set at the Channel's Abbie Hoffman celebration.
With distinctive flair, the band started their association off by making their first appearance at the East Coast Bisexual Network's annual conference as part of a 6-act entertainment lineup. Although not touring extensively, the group has been busy visiting various coffeehouses and working in the studio. Whispers of the Spirits is the most recent album of Dennis' material backed up by the Elastic Waste Band and percussionist Larry Sargent. A cassette single, We Ain't No One to Talk, is due out early this summer.
So when you ask Dennis, 'What kind of music do you play?', the answer is: Outrageous, Progressive, Political, Folk-Boogie! Be prepared for an interesting evening of music from the members of Dennis Pearne's Elastic Waste Band.
